A few books worth a look

Your summer reading list

It is summer time, you wanna read something but you don’t know what. Don’t worry, I got you covered.

cover

I really enjoy reading books lately. It is often somehow related to nature when it is not a technical book. and I wanted to share a quick few recommendations with y’all. I love books so expect more of these. I challenged myself to read 35 books and keep track on goodreads.

Here are three good recommendations.

les huit montagnes

The eight mountains by Paolo Cognetti

This is a really good book recommended by Martin Dellicour. This is the story of friendship in the Italian mountains. A friendship that evolves around old stones and mountain’s time. It is also a good story around loneliness. And a story about a father and a son, in a way. Which resonated a lot with me when I read it.

I would also suggest another one by Paolo Cognetti, the wild boy. The story also takes place in the Italian mountains.

Indian creek

Indian Creek Chronicles: A winter alone in the Wilderness by Pete Fromm

One of the first nature writing book I read. The story of a student spending its whole winter in a tent. His only job is to watch after salmon’s eggs that need to survive through the winter.

Another great story of man vs the loneliness of wilderness. Highly recommended. There is a sequel to this one where he is now a father. And hoped to bring his kids with him. Both are true stories.

The Dharma Bums

The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac

Another great part of its live. Part spiritual, part outdoors. A Buddhist experience where we follow Kerouac’s alter ego, Ray Smith, between the mountains and the jazz clubs.

I loved reading most of Kerouac’s stories. I like the writing style and personal experience mixed with fictional moments.

I would love to hear what you enjoyed reading lately. Don’t hesitate to share it with me.

A little guide to clean hiking

And other civilities for nature

Earth is in trouble, no way to question this. We are responsible for it. Now, we have multiple choices. Doing nothing, sounds probably stupid. Complaining about the past, not better. Criticizing people trying but having green gaps, this won’t help. The best solution is to act. No one is perfect. We don’t think we are but at least we are doing our part.

I could talk about our life’s choices, our everyday choices or others actions. But today, for the World environment day, I wanna talk about nature’s cleaning. It could be forest or beach. As you know, we have a little 5 years old adventurer. We decided to make him aware of the situation. We also have a set of random micro activism daily and while we wander.

Choosing to leave with less trash and have a trash bag when we are wandering allow us to not pollute more. Don’t even leave things you think are natural. A banana peal or orange peal has nothing to do in the forest or on the beach. Respect the outdoors like it was your house, because it kind of is your house. Repeat “Leave no trace” five times before leaving and every time you pick something of your bag.

Having a trash bag allow you especially to pick up trash left by others. This is free and if we all do it, soon trails and beaches are gonna be cleaner. Bye bye to plastic bottles, cigarettes butts, tissues and other trash that people leave on the go.

Where should I start?

Déchets ramassés sur la plage

You don’t need much. Just remember to have a trash bag in your bag. Don’t hesitate to have some pair of gloves also just to pick whatever you find.

If you feel lonely, bring friends, join an event. If you don’t have friends and don’t know where to find those events, follow groups like Surfers against Sewage, Trash free trails or Surfrider

TL;DR

All you need is Two minutes. If you have more time, give more. Don’t forget the boyscouts “Leave it better than you found it” and make the world a better place. Consume less! In the end the best trash is not the one that ends up in the trash can but the one that is not produced.

Just two minutes

Beaches, Habits and smiles

The small things are usually what’s helping folks to move forward. We definitively need big rocks also. But we need the small ones too. And to move forward, you know what helps the most? Positivism. Emotions are contagious. I’d rather share positive thoughts over negative thoughts when it comes to our Planet.

So, we decided to teach Tom those small actions. He needs to get that the Earth has a lot of issues and that it is our fault. He also needs to know that he can have a positive impact on our magnificent planet, even if he is only five.

One of our favorite small action that built into an habit is cleaning our beaches. You just need two minutes to help our beaches. You can give more time but two minutes already matters to make it more beautiful. We always have some kind of bags dispenser in our backpack. Something in plastic that AS Adventure offered us. It allows us to do small trash bags on demand. Plastic to take off plastic. Sounds a bit ironic, isn’t it? But it works. As soon as we see trash, we grab it, put it in the bag and throw it at the end of the trail. You can also use the “bac à marée”. You find them more and more on the French coast. Don’t hesitate to grab all the trash that the sea gives back to the beach. Keep your trash in your bag for normal trash bins. This doesn’t take much time or effort. If we all took two minutes et if we were a bit more thoughtful about our trash on the beach, it would be even better.

If you wanna help even more, don’t hesitate to go check Surfrider OR Surfers against sewage. Don’t hesitate to give to charities or give some time. Your time is your most precious gift. Earth says thanks and Tom is too.
